Clients with a relevant psychological problem* and an appropriate Medicare referral from a GP, Psychiatrist or Paediatrician may be eligible for Medicare rebates for up to 10 visits a year. The Medicare rebates are currently:
Appointments with a Clinical Psychologist: $124.50 per 50 minute consultation
*You must have an assessed mental disorder (according to the WHO, 1996, Diagnostic and Management Guidelines for Mental Disorders in Primary Care: ICD-10 Chapter V Primary Care Version) are eligible. Some examples are: panic disorder, depression, mixed anxiety and depression, ADHD, conduct disorder, bereavement disorder, eating disorders, sleep problems, unexplained somatic complaints, adjustment disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, alcohol use disorders drug use disorders, phobic disorder, generalised anxiety disorder, sexual disorders, dissociative (conversion) disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, enuresis. psychotic disorders, alcohol use disorders, adjustment disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, chronic psychotic disorders, mental disorder not otherwise specified. However there are four excluded categories, namely: quitting smoking (“tobacco use disorder”), dementia, delirium, and intellectual disability (“mental retardation”).
All the psychologists in our practice have a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology and all but one have now been accredited with Medicare to provide specialist Clinical Psychology items. Clients consulting these clinicians should receive a $124.50 rebate under the Medicare guidelines (i.e. up to 10 visits per year with appropriate referral).
If referred by a GP you must be referred under a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan to qualify for a Medicare rebate.
PLEASE NOTE: To receive a Medicare rebate you must pay the full fee upfront and then take your receipt to Medicare for your rebate.
The following services usually involve no fee to the client since we bill the relevant party directly:
* Workers Compensation claims (provided you have a referral from their GP or prior approval from the insurer).
* Veterans’ Affairs clients (provided you have a MHCP referral and have the appropriate card).
* Primary Mental Health Care (PMHC) referrals (formerly called ATAPS) with appropriate approval.
* Motor Vehicle Accidents (provided you have a referral and have a CTP claim).
For other clients paying up front, a discount rate well below the APS recommended fee is charged. Please contact the office for details of the current rates.
Rebates are offered by many private health funds.
