Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for Pain Management
How can psychological therapy help? My pain is real, not in my head!
That is very true. Pain is rarely caused by our imagination – it is usually caused by some very real problem in our body. However psychological pain management can be extremely effective in teaching people to cope with pain, particularly where there is no medical solution to the physical problem. Pain management teaches people how to overcome stress and depression, to increase their tolerance of pain, to increase their ability to be physically active, to improve their sleep, to improve their relationships, etc. – despite the fact that they suffer from pain.
A large number of research trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of CBT pain management for people with chronic pain from back injuries, neck injuries, headaches, and a wide range of other physical causes. It will not remove your pain, but it is likely to reduce the effects on your lifestyle.
Workers Compensation and CTP claimants are often able to obtain treatment with no up-front payment. We usually bill the relevant insurer directly. (see fees).
